A zonkänslig gps takes over part of the driver’s work in Volvo laddhybridbussar. The technique determines where the bus is going to the electric power and diesel respectively, and the maximum speed it can have in different areas. Volvo also test the collision avoidance system on the buses.

We call the technique Zone Management. In the first place, this gives environmental benefits. We have zero discharge areas where the bus only runs on electricity. It can walk quietly through neighborhoods and slowly over the places frequented by many people, says Helena Lind, Press Manager at Volvo Buses.

Laddhybridbussen goes about 8 km on electricity on a single charge, which takes place at the end of the line engines. If the distance is greater, one can also optimize fuel consumption using GPS control, and choose which zones are most suitable for electric and diesel power.

– We have also begun to test collision avoidance system for city buses running on electricity. When the bus becomes quiet in city traffic, and can get closer to people and travelers by its emission and noise-free, requires technology that can handle this.

Volvo laddhybridbussar the past year has been tested on line 60 between Redbergsplatsen and Masthugget in Gothenburg. Compared with the diesel fuel consumption has been reduced by 80 percent, and the total energy consumption by 60 percent. During the spring, the buses used Zone Management.

-It has worked well and will now be included in all our hybrid buses, says Helena Lind.
