Modern gear shift levers without mechanical feedback to the driver is a danger to road safety. It believes researchers at Luleå University.

New types of systems to control the automatic transmissions in passenger cars makes it difficult for the driver to put the right gear in stressful situations. The studies show that researchers at Luleå University made together with Volvo Cars and supplier Kongsberg Automotive.

– If you are in a difficult situation and, for example, need to go back soon so it may not take long to add in the right gear, says Camilla Grane, researchers in engineering psychology at Luleå University.

Modern transmissions can be controlled electro-mechanically instead of previously mechanically. This means that car manufacturers suddenly are not bound to the old system with a lever. In the new models, the gearbox can instead be controlled by means of buttons and knobs on the dashboard or perhaps with small paddles on the steering wheel. The new capabilities can be used to create more affordable structures and to make room for new facilities in the car.

– It is also a way for automakers to strengthen its brand and demonstrate that they keep up with progress, says Camilla Grane.

She believes that the difference between shifting voters are so large that they can influence the risk of an accident if the driver is in a critical situation. One example is overtaking where it happened that a driver turned off the car instead of switching to a lower gear because the gear lever been replaced by buttons on the dashboard.

Camilla Grane think that car companies should be careful with all for innovative solutions to change and see no real need of the consumers.

– the question is whether you can sell a car because you can fit an extra cup holders, she said.

the tests in her study has been made both in real cars and in laboratory conditions for it to be easier to see what factors affect how easy it is to switch.
