New DNA technique will revolutionize the hunt for criminals – Aftonbladet

With the help of new DNA technology, researchers can now develop an identikit of a suspect on the basis of, for example, a hudflaga.

The program director of the Swedish Radio “The team name” tested technology – and the result:

Not at all different.

Now reveals radio program that also Swedish police will use the method to try to find double murderer from Linköping.

DNA technology entry revolutionized forensics. A suspected offender could be folded, or freed, based on the physical track, not visible to the naked eye, which he left at the crime scene.

Just last year were made according to the “law?” 14 000 comparison traces from crime scenes and DNA profiles from convicted and suspected persons in police records.

in just under a third of the cases it was hit.

But technology continues to evolve.

“genetic phantom images”

Even today, laboratories around the world to develop so-called “genetic phantom images” to the police – that is an image created in a computer, prompted by a drop of blood or a strand of hair.

Now we hope the Swedish police for help – including solving the double murder of Mohamad Ammouri and Anna-Lena Svenson in Linköping 2004. it has long been the perpetrator’s DNA. On the blade to the murder weapon, a butterfly knife, the offender threw away was DNA – the offender’s DNA.

– We must take every opportunity to provide us with additional knowledge, says Jan Staaf the police in Östergötland to “I Act’s name. “

by analyzing a specific part of the DNA molecule that controls the body’s characteristics, one can access a person’s genotype,” drawing “of how we look.

Now researchers hope that the technology will revolutionize both the pursuit of criminals, as medical science.

– as it looks today, we can say something about your eye color, hair color and skin color, says Marie Allen Professor at the Department of immunology, genetics and pathology at Uppslaa universities to “the Act’s name.”

– the precision is somewhere between 90 and 95 percent.

“Can become powerful tools”

eventually, she says, will be able to see even the facial features. Already they have found the gene that controls the distance between the eyes.

The idea is that through this technology to develop a profile, and thus limit the number of suspects in the case.

Police in Canada, the use of technology, believe that in combination with, for example, surveillance cameras, can be a powerful tool.

at the same time, they say, the technology has obvious limitations – if someone dyed hair, is bald or wears colored lenses, it is nothing like the new technology gossip about.

it is important to combine the information from DNA to witness descriptions.

Critics argue that the survey results are poor, and that they therefore can lead investigators in the wrong direction and that faith witness is undermined.

that is why the Swedish police cautious approach.

– the uncertainty is too great at the moment, says Liselott Nielsen- Sundberg, Director of National forensic center, formerly SKL.

– I think technology has to come anymore, it’s too poor with only hair color and eye color. It not so much. There must be some more features and get a little safer outcomes.

Spanish sexmord dissolved

Last year solved the Spanish police a nearly 20-year-old sexmord the 16-year-old Eva Blanco.

the new technology received, in addition to hair color, eye color and skin color determine that the offender had probably North African origin.

the circuit shrank significantly, and around 300 people with North African origin who lived in the area around the crime scene at the time called her to topsas.

one got a hit – which, however, was not one hundred percent. The man, who gave hit, however, had a brother who had emigrated to France.

Last fall, was arrested on 52-year-old brother in France. He denied it, but his DNA profile was fully in agreement with the semen found at the crime scene.

If this technology were to be used in the case of double murder in Linköping, the circle of suspects to reduce significantly.

– Then we can choose where we want to put our resources.

it has already made an analysis of blood from the knife – and it is believed to come from a northern European one.

Will used in Sweden

Now reveals “the team name” that investigators will use new technology to learn more about the offender. DNA to be sent to a laboratory in Holland to find out the double murderer’s eyes.

Swedish Radio sent to test the method Hosted by Martin Wicklins DNA to a private laboratory, Parabon Nano Labs in the United States, to see if they could be a genetic identikit of him.

Martin Wicklins father comes from Sri Lanka, and his mother from the Torne Valley.

After only ten days, the answer came from the United States.

According to the report, the DNA of a person with brown or light brown eyes, black or brown hair, no freckles, noting that the person has a “mixed origin” partly from northeastern Europe, and from a region that includes India’s southern tip – and Sri Lanka.

the report shows, and the image of Marie Allen, and then go out to a group of people to see if she can identify Martin Wicklin.

After a few seconds, touch she selected one of the people – the right people.

– it’s not so hard to see that he is. They have done well with the image.
