Start-Stop function at a red light has started to become standard equipment for some years. Now, car electronics manufacturer Bosch one step further and introduces the function even while driving. They call it the “coasting mode”, or sailing technique in Swedish.

Studies Bosch carried out shows that the engine is not required to drive for 30 percent of the time the car from being driven at cruising speed on the highway.

By then turn it off after the same principle as at a red light peak, it becomes possible to reduce fuel consumption by 10 percent.

motor is activated again as soon as the driver touches the accelerator or the brake pedal activates the engine again.

According to Bosch, it has become possible to further develop the technology to work even while driving, thanks to improved software. The technique can also handle larger loads and activates the combustion engine is faster than previous systems.

Sailing technique works on all types of internal combustion engines – diesel, petrol or gas.

Rolf Bula Weekender at Bosch makes the forecast that this relatively inexpensive technology will soon be as common and obvious in cars with air conditioning.
