Today’s mobile phones wasting a lot of energy by emitting radio signals that will never benefit. Fully 97 percent of the signals never reach the target and is wasted, according to researchers at Ohio State University. The waste they use a new charging technology which lost radio signals instead converted into a direct current that charges the battery. Then the cell phone can manage up to 30 percent longer without recharging.

To harvest the energy from radio signals is not new in itself. There are for example small wireless temperature sensors on the market that themselves provide itself with power from air radio waves. But the Ohio scientists claim they managed to extract much greater impact by taking advantage of the radio waves directly at the source: the transmitting antenna.

Mobile phone sends signals in all directions to rapidly reach the nearest cell tower or wifi router. The researchers’ trick is to identify and capture the signals transmitted in the wrong direction, but does not disrupt the signals that handles communication. In this way they manage to catch enough of the transmitted radio signal to replenish the battery – without degrading the voice quality or data transfer. The technology only works when the mobile transmits, for example, when the user is talking on the phone, sending email or surfing.

The young company Nikola Labs will take technology to the market, and the founders plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the venture. The goal is to build the technology into mobile shell.

The price tag? Around $ 100, estimated the researchers.
