The Channel Tunnel between England and France to be used as a test track for new rail solutions.

(Updated) Eurotunnel, the 50-km-long rail link under the English Channel, will be used by the European Development Consortium for rail technology, Railenium, to try new solutions when it comes to rail transport.

The Channel Tunnel is considered to be the world’s busiest railway connection with 400 departures per day for heavy trains rolling at speeds of around 150 km / h. Trains carrying trucks through the tunnel is about 800 meters long and weighing up to 2400 tonnes.

With such a heavy load on the rail link becomes possible to perform tests on only one-fifth of the time otherwise required.

The tests should include, for example, rails, switches and other railway equipment. One question they want answered is whether the rails last longer or shorter at high load on the rest on concrete than on the rail bed of rubble.

The tunnel is already equipped with extensive measuring and test equipment making it easy to quickly evaluate different tests.
