Sweden’s first plastbro – Heavy traffic – New Technology

The old steel girder bridge over the railway in Linghem Östergötland is replaced by a plastic

Transport Administration builds Sweden’s first road bridge in plastic reinforced with glass and carbon fiber.

The old steel girder bridge over the railway in Linghem Östergötland is getting worn. Next year the car traffic therefore diverted to a new bridge, built in more modern materials.

– It will be the first road bridge built entirely of fiber composite, even those bearing parts, says Per Hansson, who is brospecialist at Trafikverket.

The composite material is a polymer reinforced with glass fiber, carbon fiber or a mixture. The construction is more expensive to manufacture than traditional bridges of steel and concrete. But construction is much faster. The approximately 23 meters long and seven meters wide bridge shipped prefabricated to eats away and lifted into place.

– The construction is fast is a big advantage because it reduces the noise of the traffic both on the bridge and on the railroad, says Per Hansson.

The material also has higher strength and requires less maintenance.

One of the challenges is that the composite bridge can not be made as slender as a traditional bridge. At the same time, it must not swell too much height: railway under the bridge requires 6.5 m clear height and the roadway may not be increased too much so that the momentum banks are steep.

Målet is that the new bridge should be in service next year. Before that Trafikverket make an Innovation Procurement – even the news to the authority. Trafikverket will produce more documentation in collaboration with three or four different contractors. Then go Authority proceed with the solution that seems best.

In the Netherlands, for example, there are composite bridges long ago, but the lack of a European sizing standard . Therefore, the Finnish Transport Agency participated in a research project that developed the technical requirements for the material to be sized. The project involves, among other things, Chalmers and consultancy WSP.

New trend: Drugs that are difficult to produce – but incredibly profitable – New Technology

Eight of the top biologics, 2014. Click on the image right column for a bigger version.

Biological drugs top the list of drugs that pull in the most money in the world. Cobra Biologics is one of the few Swedish manufacturer in the industry.

Biological drugs are proteins that are grown in living cells or bacteria. They have proven to be very effective against diseases such as rheumatism, various cancers and blood diseases. With fewer side effects than traditional drugs produced chemically, they have become hugely successful and profitable.

Seven of the eight medicines which last year raked in the most money in the world is biological. The peak is Humira, a drug for rheumatoid arthritis from Abbvie, which sold for SEK 110 billion. All eight sells for more than 50 billion per year. None of them come from Astra Zeneca.

The high income has two causes: the efficacy and that they are expensive and complicated to produce.

The active substances, often antibodies, produced by genetically modified mammalian or bacterial cells. To produce, extract and purify them is complicated.

– Everything is done in extremely controlled environments, and because it is about injection products, they must be completed in a cleanroom that is 100 000 times cleaner than an operating room, said Magnus Gustafsson on Cobra Biologics in Södertälje.

Cobra Biologics is one of the few Swedish manufacturer of biopharmaceuticals. At the company’s plants in Sweden and the UK produced biologics for clinical trials. Customers are between 50 and 60 pharmaceutical companies worldwide

Everything that is produced is sent to a facility in Matfors outside Sundsvall to either freeze-dried or filled in syringes and vials. All sources of pollution must be excluded because the drugs most often injected directly into the blood. It is a must because the proteins are broken down in the gastrointestinal tract.

The plant in Södertälje belonged to the former Astra Zeneca. In the early 2000s constituted the company’s burgeoning investment in biologics, but in 2009 was spun Cobra Biologics off. The company has since grown to 240 people.

AstraZeneca’s goal now is to come into the big players in biologics. These include Roche, Amgen and Pfizer. And to break into the list of the world’s most profitable drugs. The investment of one billion facility in Södertälje is a step along the way.

– It feels great to a large caps such as Astra Zeneca invests in biological production facilities in Sweden and the region, says Magnus Gustafsson.

New virus lurking thousands – New Technology

Trojan ravaging is so serious that the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is on. Photo: TT

A new computer virus is spreading among Swedish computers.

According to experts, it uses psychology rather than technology to overcome the recipient’s bank details.

Thousands of computers have been infected by the virus, which infects your computer that the recipient enticed to open an email that mistakenly reported to come from consumer electronics chain Elgiganten or online store Hut, reports SVT.

In the email allegedly receiver having ordered goods for thousands of kronor, which lurk many to open the file that comes with the mail. Recently sent a similar scam emails in the Tax Agency’s name.

According to IT security expert Robert Malmgren on Romab it’s more about psychology rather than technology. Typical “Nigeria letters”, which was common in the past, have been replaced by fake collection letters.

– People have become more thick-skinned and do not go to the most simple. But when people find out that someone has done business in your name, you will be cursed and will cancel the purchase, he said.

The so-called Trojan, which, among other things, grabs the user’s bank details and enables another person to empty his bank account in real time, is so serious that the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is on.

– When you can not use the technology goes to the man, which is usually the weakest link says MSB security expert Robert Jonsson.

New GPS technology provides precision of just a few centimeters – Auto Motor & Sport

Soon, the GPS technology in your mobile phone or navigator become more than a hundred times better – with the help of smart software that American scientists have developed.

,

Today’s GPS systems are not especially precise – at least not in ordinary consumer products, the accuracy can vary from one to ten meters. But now, researchers at the University of Texas have developed software to better read the GPS unit’s position.

The advantage is thus that in the future will go to use the built-in GPS unit in the cell phone or navigation system. It is the software that changes which also makes this a cheap solution, according to the researchers. There is no need for expensive special antennas.

The researchers have managed to get a accuracy of just a few centimeters, writes New Technology, and the new company Radio Ensenada where technology evolves partnered with Samsung to build technology in future mobile phones.

In the future, the GPS technique used, for example when vehicles communicate with each other. Then a car warning of an obstacle on the way and show with centimeter precision exactly where the obstacle is.

“Then your car plan ahead and avoid a crash,” said Todd Humphreys in the department of aeronautics and mechanics, in a press release.

Keep up to date with the newsletter!

I think it is important to develop GPS technology with greater accuracy.

The long battle for radio listeners – New Technology

Click the image on the right for a larger version.

The question of Sweden to maintain FM network or the DAB radio might be approaching a response. But a struggle between lobbies and detailed technical discussions, making it difficult to keep up with the debate. New Technology sorts out what is technology and politics.

How do you and I listen to radio in the future? Should the state build a nationwide digital broadcasting networks, and scrap the analogue FM network? Or can the FM network – which today reaches all Swedes – developed?

The Alliance Government mission laid Nina Wormbs, associate professor of art history at KTH, in December, an account of how the transition to digital broadcasting, or DAB radio (Digital Audio Broadcasting) to go to. The technology proposed to be used is called DAB +.

Implemented DAB + must all households buy new receivers. Approximately 10 million units, according Wormbs, while others argue that it is more a case of 20 million.

The starting point for her study is that FM -nätet be extinguished 2022. But resistance is compact. Not least, the heavy engineering instances negative, shows the responses which was recently submitted to the Minister of Culture Alice Bah Kuhnke.

Behind a no standing among other ICU (Engineering Sciences), Ericsson, the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency, university KTH Foundation .SE and the association Digital Radio Sweden.

DAB / DAB + constitutes an outdated transmission technology, they believe. More modern standards for digital radio should be investigated. More national channels than those that exist today can be obtained by retaining and developing the FM network. In addition, more and more come to consume radio programs via the Internet. Consumers are demanding not dab in the day, claim the opponents.

No cell phone manufacturers have put in DAB capability in handsets, “because there is no global market “, points out, for example, Marianne Treschow, Digital Radio Sweden.

Dab proponents, however, stresses the importance of a Swedish digital broadcasting networks . Among them are the Teracom, Swedish Radio, private radio broadcasters (who do not have license fees for FM licenses of 130 million a year) and electronics (foreign-owned consumer electronics chains).

According to Teracom is Internet distributed radio – despite the growing trend – no real alternative, because over 90 percent of the listening today is via terrestrial FM transmitter and traditional radio receiver.

På Swedish Radio has been in a hurry. CEO Priscilla Benkö boxes to parliament clubs extinguishing decision this year. A DAB radio is a must for the sake of consumers, otherwise they end up in the hands of internet and mobile operators, she believes.

” the Internet can not handle the capacity and additionally have to pay extra to be able to listen to Radio Sweden in which, first, for a subscription, and secondly for data traffic, “she wrote in a chat.

Även National Audit Office has engaged in the battle for the radio broadcast. State dab plans are not economically viable and the industry has been the major influence and listening perspective is absent in the analyzes, considers the authority.

To put it succinctly deals with DAB transition to create more national channels for commercial radio. You want to develop program activities and increase diversity.

However, when the Authority for Radio and Television recently decided on 21 national licenses were those of four private players – including two media giants MTG (Kilohertz AB) and SBS, which already broadcasts in FM network.

What can challenge DAB? First FM network. But there are also other digital broadcasting options (see illustration beside), although factors such as sound quality, range and frequency of collisions complicate.

Norwegian government’s decision to extinguish the FM network in 2017 arouses anger in the country. There’s DAB listening today, 19 percent. In the Storting, an anti-dab-politicians now leading the working group for the country’s decision, suggesting a willingness to compromise.

As of Porvoo, Product Radio on Teracom, are “war weary”. But DAB is still the best way, he assesses. Teracom want to bet on a standard that harmonizes with our neighbors, provides more national channels – and for which the radio receivers are available for purchase.

What is what determines Swedish government elections in the future? Bertil Thorgren, emeritus professor of telecommunications economics at the Stockholm School of Economics, the alarms are important.

– You must be able to reach all homes and cars with the warning message. It is not so good with DAB, which gets worse coverage. One must keep the FM network at least 15-20 years.

Dab-investigator Nina Wormbs think it is about what politicians really want.

– What you want to do with the radio in the future information society is a political issue and is about what we want for media in the future. But by making it a technical issue, it allows you pretend that it is not about politics. I think that the political discussion around this kind of shift, and what to wear it, so far absent.

Nina Wormbs investigation prepared by the Ministry of Culture. The date of a bill to Parliament is not determined.

Anna’s chronicle Mobile phones are taking up too much space and makes us less … – Östgöta Correspondent

A few years ago we had a discussion in the family about when you really are old enough to have their own smartphone. Our children went to primary school and several classmates had started to come to school with their own iPhone. This was in the time when their own iPhone is still seen as some sort of status marker, so enough was both me and my husband a little surprised that there was something that children would suddenly have. “But, Mom, how old were you when you got your first smartphone?” The son asked, hoping to maybe get an answer that would strengthen his rights. He had not anticipated that it would be the 37th

It was actually not so long ago nobody had its own smartphone. People did not even have a cell phone. Nowadays, one wonders how the society in general worked, when you could not expect everyone to be connected basically around the clock. Strangely enough, things must have worked. But it is remarkable how quickly we’ve gotten used to the Internet in your pocket.

Carina Glenn Hastings fine story about three people who have opted out of mobile phone has aroused many reactions. Not least, it seems many recognize themselves in frustration that mobile phones are taking up too much space and do so that people will be less present. I feel myself again myself in it. Poor mobile manners on the job meetings makes me irritable, just like when people suddenly sitting with their mobiles in the middle of dinner. The feeling of being away priority of a phone is indeed disheartening.

While I readily admit that I have loved smartphones from first sight. My first smartphone was called for my fourth child of the family. For me, life has become richer, easier and more fun with the Internet in your pocket. I can not imagine a return to a life without constant connection. But – screen time is a problem.

The solution may not be less technology, but more. I recently read an interesting blog post by blogger and journalist Fredrik Wass at Resumé, in which he pointed to a very interesting phenomenon. Next big uppsnackade gadget is the smart watch. Interest for Apple’s new Watch is huge, so big that Apple can not deliver the watches to all who have pre-ordered. The clock is actually a small computer on the wrist, connected to the mobile phone. Apple itself believes that the time is going to be a success, bigger than the smart phone and tablet. It remains, of course, to see and reviews of the smart watch contains a lot of rice. But Fredrik Wass makes a great reconnaissance: it may be that smart watches fills a human need, namely greater presence and less screen time.

How? Is not it just another screen that steals attention? It is not safe. On smart watches, you can follow the flow in his mailbox – but you can not answer the same way when there is no sensible keys. While you can get notifications from Facebook – but it is more difficult to interact. And no one will of course very keen to go and stare into a minimal screen for hours.

Several US technology bloggers testify that it is just that: with a smart clock to get their updates, but the incentive to act directly at them disappear. The result is that the mobile phone may be, a quick look at the clock hands, and you become more present. The total screen time is reduced, the attention in the present moment increases.

It remains, as I said to see how the market for smart watches and other connected gadgets unfolds, but the technology that fills our needs will always win in the long run. Need for Community, confirmation, track, entertainment. But also the presence and the ability to enjoy the present.

Bilanalytiker: It’s over for Nevs – New Technology

“The technology is not there, the money is not there, the market is not,” is the automotive analyst Martin Sköld’s harsh judgment on Nevs future. Photo: TT

Nevs in Trollhättan has recently gone out of its recent reconstruction and hope for new billion investors. But there will be no comeback, says automotive analyst.

– The history of Saab and Nevs is like a old bad relationship where you do not want to let go. One grasps at every straw, hoping for the next holiday, the next billion investors, then it should turn. But it is short, it is just to face the truth, let go and indulge in something better, says Martin Shield, automotive analyst at the Stockholm School of Economics.

The tone in Trollhättan is just as hopeful as ever.

– There goes forward. We have collaborations in the pipeline. But there is nothing we can communicate yet, says Mikael Östlund, head of communications at Nevs.

Somehow it still leaked to there are new billion investment at the time, from an Asian automakers. Perhaps an Indian. Or Chinese.

According to Mikael Östlund has Nevs currently 350 employees, including 120 hourly employees and the rest engineers and other officials.

Nevs have owned the assets of Saab Automobile since September 2012. In December 2013 they started the factory for six months the company produced 400 pieces of gasoline-powered Saab 9- 3 with automatic or manual transmission, available in black or silver. In May 2014 being stopped production.

The last year has Nevs exclusively manufacturing spare parts for Orio (formerly Saab Parts). Now even the order is completed, Orio believes it has enough parts to all Saabs ever built.

Would anyone like restart the car factory, you can not come to any volume production in 2015. It will take longer.

– Among other things, we must then know what to produce. Decisions must be taken, suppliers must be contacted, says Mikael Östlund.

When Nevs went out reconstruction in mid-April was welcomed there by the supplier organization FKG , which counted on the negotiations for collaborations could take off. CEO Fredrik Sidahl assessment

Frederick Sidahl is CEO of FKG, who have automotive suppliers as members. He wants to express themselves cautiously.

– It would be very good for Sweden if we had two car manufacturers. So I can not do other than say, “Hope, hope they get it together here.” For our member companies, I say that they must evaluate the risks that lies in taking assignments for a new car company, for that is what it is now, says Fredrik Sidahl.

Hopp and faith is the economic analysis with regard Nevs. But it does not hold, says automotive analyst Martin Shield.

– The technology is not there, the money is not there, the market is not. If any investors throwing in a billion, it is nice, but it will not lead to any car production in Trollhättan. The technology they have access to is outdated and the dream to break into the market with electric cars or conventional cars is just a dream. It is full out there of strong brands that deliver sought-after technologies. BMW and Audi are some examples.

– The basic problem is that the market is not asking for the cars. It was the same with Saab.
