BMW electric car charging in the lamppost – New Technology

Replace an ordinary light pole against a lamp post with integrated charging socket. This allows the infrastructure for electric car chargers to be expanded quickly and smoothly. So reason the German car manufacturer BMW, which has developed the combined lykt- and charging post Light and charge.

So far two prototypes in operation at BMW’s headquarters in Munich. Spring 2015 will start a larger pilot test in the city.

The lantern may have one, two or four LED modules to give light to the streets as well as major thoroughfares. But to replace a regular post with the new technology, there must be a suitable place to park.

BMW has developed several rechargeable cars including the all-electric i3 and i8 plug-in hybrid.

car giant is not alone in wanting to take advantage of the existing network of lampposts to charge electric cars . An article on nyteknik.se last summer describes a solution from the Swedish company Liros power solution. There is a finished loading module that can be mounted on standard light fixtures.
