They move tomorrow’s news to the coffee cup – New Technology

New Technology met KTH students who want to make carton projection screen.

In a new collaboration between Stockholm University’s journalism program, the MSc program in Media Technology at KTH and the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, students have explored the future media landscape.

On 17 December, it was time for presentation at KTH in Stockholm. Among the different concepts that the students developed were services that adapt news flow after the user’s schedule, interests and geographical location, reports to custom scent experiences and voice guided, interactive podcasting.

Olof Lindman, Åsa Linder, Johanna Sjoberg and Lucas Maupin , students at KTH media programs showed off their project Packaged Stories, a concept to show the film on various types of paper packaging. An example of how it might work out can be to a person who bought the coffee in paper cup can watch a video about how the beans to the coffee produced, directly on the mug. (See example from the presentation movie above).

– We began by reflecting on what we think is a likely future in this range. What trends do we see? And we believe that the production of cardboard will increase, says Åsa Linder.

The reasons behind this development is to the global living standards rise, with more consumption and e-commerce as a result.

– In a global world is more around the world and then you need some kind of container. And the containers that we think will win the box. Plastic is a little too expensive to produce and to some extent are not environmentally friendly, and steel, it is offset to be on the big boats, the gigantic containers, says Olof Lindman.

According to him, need to surface showing the moving picture, a circuit covered bioplastfilm, nor be costly:

– On an industrial scale will be the same cost as the press box.

Still, it is difficult to say how long time is left until a prototype could be made, but the project is fully technically possible to realize.

– All the technology that we would like to use is today, but to integrate and create such a small display at a reasonable price, it’s hard to say when it can go, says Olof Lindman.

The students, however, has begun a dialogue with wood and cardboard business about their ideas.

New rules: Drones with cameras need permission – New Technology

Cameras on drones to be covered by surveillance teams. Datainspektionen won in the Appeal.

After a long legal battle is now beating of Appeal in Jönköping firm that CCTV Act applies to cameras mounted on drones and filming or taking pictures of the places where the public has access, such as parks or streets.

The Data Inspection Board, which is the central supervisory authority, has always interpreted the rules as to the law includes cameras on drones.

Is the new court ruling victory for the Data Inspection Board?

– Yes, absolutely, we can of course see clearly in the judgment that this technology should be covered by the law, says Malin Ricknäs, lawyer for the inspection.

The judgment means that one must have permission for camera use the County Administrative Board.

Several similar cases have been up for trial. The present case concerns an entrepreneur in Lotorp in Finspång municipality – photographing nature, land – and residential areas and buildings from above. He believes that photography should not be regarded as surveillance and appealed a decision of the provincial government. He got the first right in the Administrative Court, who argued that the short flight time played the role of assessment.

But the Appeal goes entirely to the Data Inspection line and eliminates the Administrative Court.

The Court considers, among other things, that the use of cameras on drones in public places can mean big risks for invasion of privacy, and that the legislature intended to regulate this.

According to the new judgment considered the camera as permanent ranking, which is a requisites for the law to apply.

Another condition concerns the operation. For hand-operated cameras on mobiles and frogs, other rules apply than surveillance law.

But the companies in the case stated that the camera on his quadrocopter can shoot on their own.

– The judgment has not yet becomes effective. We will now see if it appealed to the Supreme Court, says Malin Ricknäs.

A similar case applies to a photographer in Skåne filming gardens with drones, that goal has delvits followed up in appeal, but is not completely settled .

Only pennies from Nevs affair ends up in Trollhattan – New Technology

ANALYSIS. At most, 1.5 billion of the new Nevsavtalet end up in Trollhattan, shows Ny Teknik’s analysis of the figures.

Let’s assume that everything is true, for it is, after all, what we want. After all, soon Christmas, and people around the mangled car factory in Trollhattan need so urgently something positive.

The agreement is about 150,000 electric cars by 9-3 bodywork and 100,000 second electric vehicles, as well as services, from manufacturers other than Nevs, 2020. Total value of this is said to be 100 billion. How the money is distributed between Nevs and others, and between Trollhättan and China, is not clear.

It is not clear if this is a contract or a declaration of intent, and what the prospective purchaser Panda New Energy has for economic opportunities reality. But let us say assume that everything is true.

If we, for example, beats out the 100 billion level of 250 000 vehicles, the cost SEK 400 000 per car. For an electric car is not an unreasonable cost, might suffice even to some “services”.

More interesting is when we start to calculate how much of the money that lands in Trollhättan. Which should, at most, produced 150 000 painted bodies of type 9-3. The cost of producing one is, at the most, SEK 10 000. This means that a maximum of 1.5 of the 100 billion goes to Nevs in Trollhättan.

Until 2020, equivalent to SEK 300 million a year. Perhaps it is enough to pay for 200 engineers and as many car builders. Nevs currently has 400 employees.

Panda New Energy is an unknown player in the Chinese electric vehicle market. Panda, who ordered the electric cars of Nevs to a value of 100 billion until 2020, aiming to become a world leading leasing companies for green cars.

Panda and Nevs must expect tough competition from other new electric car company backed up of Chinese investors.

One of the most paraphrasing new electric vehicle company in China named NextEV . With the money from, inter alia, Chinese entrepreneurs and Internet company Tencent aims NextEV to challenge Tesla with an electric car with big bites of it.

These days it became clear that the company recruited the IT giant Cisco’s former chief technology officer Padmasree Warrior as chief for the development of, among other things, the car’s software.

– We do not only build an electric car. We look across the transportation experience and how it can be optimized, she tells the magazine Technology Review.

NextEV is headquartered in Shanghai and company chairman Martin Leach was previously head of Maserati and chairman of Ford of Europe.

The company started in 2014 and has so far developed a single-seater electric car racer who competed in the Formula E for electric cars. During the next year the company will launch an electric sports car that will be followed by a electric car for the mass market, primarily in China.

And there are more new electric car company backed by Chinese investors, which have formed part of their Development in Silicon Valley.

New technologies can save more stroke patients – New Technology

With the help of a weak current through the brain, researchers can see if the patient has suffered a stroke. This method is called bioimpedance, that is, measurement of electrical resistance of biological matter. Photo: KTH

By measuring the electrical resistance in the brain can determine what type of stroke a patient has suffered and treat early. There is hope for new findings from KTH.

Each year approximately 30 000 people in Sweden of stroke. It is also the third leading cause of death in the world.

The sooner a stroke patient receives treatment, the better the prospects.

– Today, it can take hours of patient had a stroke until it via x-ray to see if there is a blood clot or stroke. The more time that passes, the greater part of the brain is lost, said Fernando Seoane, associate professor of biomedical engineering at KTH, in a press release.

An international research project is therefore involved to try to get the equipment on an early stage, preferably already in the ambulance, determine if the patient has suffered a stroke.

– This would definitely remove stroke as one of the top three causes of death worldwide, says Fernando Seoane.

KTH doctoral student Sayed Reza Atefi has been in clinical tests commissioned sending a small current through the brain in several patients and measured the resistance. Then he has seen a stroke changes the electrical properties of the brain tissue.

It is now hoped that the method will also be used in a new instrument to determine the type of stroke, bleeding or clot, the patient suffered .

– It is absolutely essential to know in an emergency situation. Is there a haemorrhage can not deploy clot-dissolving medicine, will then take to the life of the patient, says Kaj Lindecrantz, Professor of Medical Technology at KTH.

So far the measurement results to be promising. The general tendency is that a bleeding create a smaller electrical resistance in the brain tissue, while a stopper gives a greater resistance. But Kaj Lindecrantz points out that more studies must be done to ensure the connection of different frequencies and different locations of brain damage.

The measuring method can also be valuable when it comes to monitoring patients who have suffered a minor stopper disappearance of itself. For such patients, it is likely that a larger clot occurs in the following week.

– Then you can quite easily put a pair of electrodes on the skull and monitor them around the clock, because it is especially important to monitor when they sleep, he says.

The plan is now to KTH researchers to proceed with tests on patients with acute stroke to verify the measurement method.

In addition KTH also includes Karolinska Hospital, Karolinska Institute, University of Borås, Harvard University and the General Hospital of Massachusetts in the project.

Sjukvårdsrådgivning with modern technology – Skovde News

Voice Phone and a website is not the only possible ways to communicate remotely nowadays. It should be possible to use even for healthcare.

Reason Healthcare Board of Västra Götaland now given a mandate to a modern distance counseling will be developed. Video calling is something that can be used. It called Internet of Things also wants to take advantage. It can be done using equipment such records heart rate of a person and sends data about this over the internet.

But politicians in healthcare Board recognizes bluntly that recent technological advances in this area is not their strongest side. Therefore, they want to implement innovation procurement, where the requests from the client will be met by goods and services that are not necessarily available on the market today.

Some political disagreements were, however, and the Social Democrats and the Left dissenting in favor of its own proposal.

– There is a risk that practitioners are not good at innovation. There are many call centers, but we want to hold off and focus on their expertise or consultants said Jim Aleberg (S).

– We politicians locks us easily in technical matters we do not understand, ‘said Tony Johansson (MP), who thinks that innovation procurement is a good idea.

Nevs can start building electrified 9-3 – New Technology

The Swedish-Chinese car company Nevs say they will start building electric cars by the end of 2017. The first car gets bodywork from 9-3, which debuted in 2002.

If Nevs manages to get some car production in two years it will be with an electrified classic. The plan is for the 15 year old body from 9-3 again be built in Trollhattan, provided with a chassis that has been converted for electrification and then shipped to China, where it will be finally assembled to electric cars in a new factory in Tianjin. The new factory and an R & D center has just begun to be built, and will have a production capacity of 200 000 cars a year. The vehicles are primarily sold in China.

Nevs CEO Mattias Bergman told a business meeting on December 10 about the company’s plans. Eventually want to launch four more models. However, it is unclear where the cars will be designed and built, and whether they will be called Saab. Possibly they should be built on part of the so-called Phoenix architecture.

Nevs recruiting mainly engineers in Trollhättan. In the spring, the old Saab factory rebuilt before produktionsomstarten the end of 2017. From next year should again start hiring a car builder, says Mikael Östlund, head of communications at Nevs.

The entire initiative will cost several billion, money that will from Nevs new owner, the city of Tianjin development area, Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Area (THT), and the Beijing State Research Information Technology (SRIT).

Saab’s new wing panel lowers air resistance – New Technology

Saab has built a wing panel in the composite that is unique in the world and will reduce aircraft CO2 emissions.

Defence group Saab has unveiled a new wing panel in Linköping. The latter is a result of the EU research project Clean Sky, which aims to reduce global aviation’s climate impact.

The panel measuring 9×3 meters in size and will in 2017 test flown at the aircraft manufacturer Airbus aircraft.

On Sunday flown the huge wing portion to Vitoria in Spain where the Spanish company AERNNOVA to build it into an Airbus A340. Because the wing is so large, Saab has hired the giant plane Antonov-12 to cope with the freight.

According to the company’s Business Unit Director Dan Jangblad (Industrial Products and Services), the special design represent a technological breakthrough in the world in terms of to reduce CO2 emissions from aviation in the future. We now need to test flights falling out well.

– What we believe it will lead to considerably less drag, lower fuel consumption and lower emissions, he said.

The company’s engineers made is to build top of an airplane wing without gaps, joints and rivets, which would otherwise increase the resistance of the air flow above the wing.

The rounded front edge of the wing are connected by the wing panel and forming a planar overall.

– The aim is to make the wing so smooth the flow to be laminar, said Dan Jangblad.

The wing panel consists of the bottom of a composite construction with both longitudinal and transverse beams. At that has placed a composite shell that then cured in a mold.

The wing panel must then be mounted on a base. It has so far only made in two copies, one of which was intended for Saab’s own testing.

On Airbusens the other side will come a flow symmetric wing to be mounted.

It comes from the British GKN Aerospace, and is built using simpler technology, according to Jonas Bohlin, technical manager of the project “CleanSky SFWA BLADE” on Saab. One should now make comparisons of the functionality.

Saab’s budget for wing demonstrator in the Clean Sky project amounts to 300 million SEK. The cost is shared by the company and the European Commission.

The company is one of twelve participants and “co-leader” with Airbus.

Bill Gates climate alliance can invest in Sweden – New Technology

Sweden’s involvement in Obama’s new global climate initiative could lead to Bill Gates new venture alliance invests in Swedish energy projects. “The private investors to invest in the countries involved,” says Research Helene Hellmark Knutsson.

Climate Initiative “Mission Innovation” launched by Barack Obama, US president, on climate meeting’s first day in Paris recently.

It is a collaboration between 20 countries – including Sweden-and it-billionaire Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Coalition “. It is an alliance of 28 private operators. Among them are well-known billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezo and businessman George Soros.

In a YouTube video (which you can see here above) Gates says that the goal of the alliance is to provide investment boost to companies that work with R & D projects which could lead to technological breakthroughs in the energy sector. The aim is to develop strange new ideas that can help to stem the effects of climate change, particularly in poor and vulnerable countries.

US invitation to Sweden came when Helene Hellmark Knutsson (S) Minister of Higher Education and Research, visited the Research Forum in Kyoto, Japan, in early October. There she met Obama’s science adviser John Holdren.

– We had a meeting, and then he picked up that Obama wanted to take a climate initiative before the Paris meeting and asked if we were interested in being involved, says Helene Hellmark Knutsson.

The Swedish participation, she points , is in line with Sweden’s policy objective of becoming a fossil-nation forward.

The forms of cooperation are not confirmed in detail. But an important principle that research results produced shall be transparent and shared by the parties involved.

The countries participating in the climate initiative promises to double R & D allocation in the area of ”clean energy” by 2020. America’s part, it is about four billion dollars.

Here at home, the Government is today more than 100 million research per year in the areas of renewable energy and efficient energy technologies. They are now expected to increase to 240-250 million in 2020.

According to Helene Hellmark Knutsson has the private investors, however, an important role to fill if the initiative is to be successful.

Gates alliance commits namely to invest and invest venture capital in the countries participating in Mission Innovation. The idea is that billionaires should be able to latch on to promising R & D projects and provide early-stage financing or seed money.

Will we get See Bill Gates or any of the other members of the alliance to invest in smart Swedish energy future?

– Yes, if the are sufficiently competitive globally. What I find exciting is to find cost-effective solutions to provide clean energy at low cost, says Helene Hellmark Knutsson.

What do you hope to achieve with this Swedish participation?

– What we want to achieve is an increased focus on research and Innovation in the energy development, in which Sweden already today has a leading role. We would also strengthen the implementation and testing of the technology.

The Swedish participation also shows that Sweden is taking a global responsibility for the climate, which is important, she says.

Will the guidelines for money in the forthcoming research bill?

– Yes, much will we have in the bill, but then it will also be calls via expert authorities.

Grease gets quiet on the disturbing wheels squeal – New Technology

Lubricant on the rail reduces the disturbing noise significantly, shows the study. Photo: Alamy

Jet lubricant on the rail so reduces distracting wheel screams significantly. It shows the Swedish Transport Administration’s tests in Södertälje and the Ore Line.

Wheel Shout it tågljud that bothers people most most. The sound having a frequency between 400 Hz and 10 kHz, can occur because of friction wheels against both the outer and the inner rail in curves. Transport Administration has a two-year project tested a new way to reduce the noise with a lubricant that reduces friction. The tests are aimed partly at Malmbanan and in a tight curve in Södertälje.

– The surveys we have done shows that the wheels scream can reduce the up to 13 dB in exposed places, and there is a marked difference, says Matthias Asplund, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Transport Administration lubricates ago long rail sides in exposed stretches to reduce friction and wear. What is new is that the lubricant is now in place is applied on top of the rail. The challenge is that friction then not be reduced too much because the trains must have left his braking ability.

lubricant must also be electrically conductive. The reason that the railway signal system keeps track of where trains are by measuring the electrical potential between the right and left rail. When a train passes so short wheel axis voltage and the potential difference between the rails disappear. Then know signaling that a train is at a certain distance. The lubricant is therefore contains iron, so that the axles are still shorting the rails.

– We modifies friction without compromising the safety and driveability, says Matthias Asplund .

is applied by using strips with holes that are mounted on the rail, plus a solid lubricating station that stands at the side of the track. Every time a train passes activates a pump that ejects lubricant after every fifth wheel passage. The wheel takes the muck up to five kilometers. In addition to wheels scream decreases, also reduces wear on rails and wheels.

The project is a collaboration between the Swedish Transport Administration, Lulea University of Technology and Railway Research Centre. The lubrication technique called Top of rail and used previously in Canada. In Sweden there are no decisions to start using the method.

– But my guess is that we have 50 such here lubricating stations within a decade, says Matthias Asplund.

The cost he estimates to be around 200,000 to 300,000 per lubrication station in round figures , considerably less than building and maintaining noise barriers. He also says that there are more methods to silence wheels scream, for example by optimizing wheel and rail profile. In an EU project is now evaluated several solutions.
