Salem may be forced to stop using Google Apps - Swedish Dagbladet

In 2010, Salem the first municipality in the country to move their IT services to Google Apps. About 900 employees and 2,500 students went from using a Microsoft based environment to use Google Apps. Other municipalities have shown interest to follow suit but the Data Inspection Board has halted.

Founded in 2011 criticized Datainspektionen Salem municipality for failing to meet the Data Protection Act in connection with the use of cloud services from Google. Municipality of Salem brought out a new contract with IT giant, but on Monday announced a decision by the Data Inspection Board that there are also shortcomings in the new agreement.

The Data Inspection Board provides Google agreement for large space to process personal data for its own purposes. Moreover, the Swedish authority critical to it is not clear which subcontractors hired or what happens to personal data after the agreement.

Datainspektionen therefore requires the Salem municipality fixing the flaws in the agreement or stop using the cloud service. Data Inspection Board’s decision only covers the use of e-mail and calendar as a cloud service.
