Old technology was replaced – at the submarine hunt – Expressen

Last year’s anti-submarine warfare in the archipelago was initiated in October 17 after the military received tips from a “credible source”. The tip moves a sighting of a suspicious submarine Kanholmsfjärden and leads to the immediate activity of the Navy. Several corvettes sent to the field. In the afternoon, takes one more observation in Nämdö Bay.

The very next day extended insert with more ships and helicopters, while new tips come in.

Armed Forces never managed to directly observe the alleged submarine. And now reveal SvD that the Navy’s corvettes underwent an extensive electronic exchange middle of the ongoing anti-submarine warfare. Among the things that should be changed every corvette the sonar systems, ie exactly the equipment used to search for submarines. The reason must have been that the old sonar system worked poorly.

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, FMV, confirmed to the newspaper that the upgrade to a new sonar system “stretches 2011-2016″. However, to FMV does not confirm whether the four corvettes that participated in the submarine hunt had been upgraded to the new system.

– Exact schedules for ongoing projects when we change the system and upgrade the capacity is punishable by defense secrecy, says Luise Bjarke, Press Officer FMV, to SvD.

Corvettes equipped with the old, dysfunctional, the system can therefore have participated. SvD has requested that the information be disclosed and the Armed Forces have initiated a privacy investigation.
