Micael Bydén: “We are extremely vulnerable today” – Expressen

Sweden are constantly exposed to foreign powers cyber attacks – and now Sweden develop its own capacity to fight back with the same technology. It told the supreme commander Micael Bydén of echoes The Saturday interview.

– We must be at the forefront and be technically skilled and long term, we must also actually be able to influence in the other direction, he said.

Captain Micael Bydén was Saturday guest of echoes the Saturday interview. There he was, among other things, questions about Sweden today are influenced by foreign countries’ intelligence and other kinds of influence, such as the so-called denial of service attacks in which technical systems in the country are affected. This can involve everything from Internet systems to monetary flows and electricity.

– We have established that the intelligence on the military has increased. It was active for many years ago during the Cold War, and it has grown up again. It takes different forms, he said, and developed:

– We see the mapping and we are looking to try to measure our ability to see what capacity we have. It may be infringing on our IT systems. There are a number of examples where we can observe it.

Micael Bydén mean that Sweden today is very vulnerable.

– Look back on the interdependencies of society. It does not matter if you’re talking about electricity, or cash flows. We are extremely vulnerable today. And this is about being able to handle the technical part, he said.

Attack against media houses

March 19 directed some form of cyber attack against several leading Swedish media newsrooms, which at times came to beat the ability to take some of their news online. This was mentioned during the Saturday interview as an example.

– There is not only against the media house, but against other systems as well, not least against us. It is also done by going into the system to retrieve information for any reason to build a competence and disturb us out, he said and continued:

– It is about creating an uncertainty with us, we are under attack and attack? Or is this something else, maybe a glitch? It is about creating concerns, and only by doing that and you have won.

The aim would, according to the Supreme Commander is to influence public opinion in the country but also to rule Sweden’s preparedness and capacity to deal with the intrusion.

Give back with the same coin

When it told Micael Bydén that the defense had the task of developing the ability to strike back with the same technology to a foreign power.

– we must be at the forefront of understanding how it fits together and be technically skilled. In the long term, we will actually be able to influence in the other direction, he said and continued:

– The Armed Forces have been given a mission with the support of the FRA, the National Defence Radio Establishment to now develop a concept where we do not you just should be able to say this, but also be able to influence those who wish to do us harm.

Micael Bydén did not specify what kind of ability is all about, but hinted that it concerns the same methods as Sweden exposed .

– the aim is that anyone who wants to influence us, we will give us their capacity so that we will not have impact on ourselves. We should at least have the capacity to do something about it which turns out to come here, he said.

This, he argued, was a natural progression for the war and defense are now handled.

– it is as important today in our society as it is to have a navy, an army or an air force. It is a new arena that we have to understand, to act where just like any other. Otherwise it is a field where everyone else does and we are standing there outside, said Micael Bydén.
