On the tram is a camera with an image sensor that has a resolution of 0.05 mm at a speed of 36 km / h. This means that the driver can get information about the smallest crack in the rails.

The sensor has been developed by the Austrian Institute of Technology, AIT, in cooperation with Fraunhofer IMS. It is even available for speeds up to 300 km / h, but with a resolution of 0.4 mm.

On Vision trade fair in Stuttgart November 4 to 6 demonstrated the technology in AITs booth.

With a 3D-based driver assistance systems must tram journeys made safer and more comfortable . An intelligent optical 3D sensor systems must be able to evaluate the risk around a detected object in the vicinity of the track.

Such a system has already been developed in collaboration with the tram manufacturer Bombardier and used on trams in the Frankfurter Verkehrs-Gesellschaft, so far as prototype.

The fair also demonstrated a 3d panoramic camera for mobile robots, that even in difficult lighting conditions to work uninterrupted. One use for these are in robots that can be deployed for inspection at the forest fires to provide a picture of the fire area without human needs at risk.
