Sweden on the ball with the future of commodities – New Technology

Reduced dependence on high-tech metals, better recovery and new products. The government opens wallet to let Sweden drive innovation trends in commodities.

SEK 24 million over eight years . The government wants to bet to Swedish universities and colleges to participate in a European innovation platform for commodities. And along with Swedish corporations to help create new products that enhance the growth and competitiveness.

The money will go to the basic fee as members of an upcoming new European Knowledge Innovation platform in commodities must pay. But they now can not use their allocations for. Previously participation demanded that the government has made an exception.

– It is not about research in the traditional sense, but about innovation and education around commodities, says Pär Weihed, professor at Luleå University of Technology.

In today’s budget, open the government to provide three million euros per year . Everything provided that the application for Sweden, together with ten other European countries, submitted to the European Institute of Innovation and Technology EIT, granted. Pär Weihed at Luleå University plays a leading role in efforts to Sweden and Luleå’ll get to be the node that coordinates innovation efforts for so-called primary commodities.

– This may involve creating innovations in everything from new automatic mining in deep mines to new products, he says.

With the banana are large Swedish companies like Atlas Copco, Boliden, LKAB and Sandvik. All major universities and technical colleges are also included in the proposed network.

– It feels great if the government can secure our participation, although it is a bit premature, says Pär Weihed.

A decision on which of the four competing networks designated as Europe’s new Knowledge and Innovation Platform made in December. The network, which include Sweden, has 70 partners from eleven countries. In addition to Sweden included Finland, Germany, Holland, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Belgium and Ireland.
