Brazil’s Gripen deal will increase the interest in Sweden – New Technology

Flygvapenchefen and FXM’s Director-General Welcomes Saab’s Gripen Business with Brazil. Both look Swedish benefits.

Brazil’s purchase of 36 new Gripen E / F has several positive effects for Sweden. The cooperation between Sweden and Brazil is expected to grow and get spin-off effects.

– We are looking forward to this broader cooperation between our air force, says Micael Bydén.

He sees several advantages for the Armed Forces – even if it is about a deal between Saab Gripen manufacturer and Brazil – instead of an intergovernmental agreement that was planned with Switzerland.

Partly assesses Bydén that Brazil-order can contribute to cost-sharing with Sweden “at any level” in the development of next-generation Gripen system. It not only Swedish Air Force, a strategic partner of the Brazilian Air Force.

– Brazil has a large Air Force during development and want to go down the same path of development as we . I envisage that we among other things can collaborate on training, safety and teach us that we are operating in two different environments.

Both can also take advantage of industrial cooperation between Saab and Brazilian airplane giant Embraer. Micael Bydén was recently myself in Brazil and saw when the first prototype of Embraer’s new transport aircraft KC-390 rolled out of the factory. If the plane delivers what it promises, it may be a possible replacement for Swedish Hercules (C-130), he estimates.

Ulf Hammarström , director general of the Defence Export Agency, FXM, also sees other Swedish benefits. When the Air Force acquisition was completed last week, he was in São Paulo with several Swedish government representatives in order to promote Swedish innovations.

– Fully clearly increases the Saab deal interest in Swedish technology and Swedish companies here in Brazil, he said.

Brazil wants in addition to the purchase rent a number of Swedish Gripen C / D aircraft in the coming years. An intergovernmental agreement, including time schedule, expected to be completed before the New Year.

Is it given security policy developments with increased Russian activity anyway possible for the Armed Forces to spare Gripen?

– The conditions to lend C / D plane change over time. We are continuously working on the issue in close dialogue with FXM, says Micael Bydén.
