It is well known to the great challenges that the world’s media companies face is a technology shift. TV companies must now be able to reach their audiences on platforms that do not even exist a few years ago, and common to all is that the new platforms accessed via mobile or fixed broadband, which of course is Ericsson’s home.
The Company have the last seven years spent billions on companies in the field of television technology. These include purchase of Mediaroom from Microsoft last year, and the acquisition of Red Bee who handles much of the technology for the British TV companies. Swedish TV4′s one of the hundreds of TV channels that currently utilize Ericsson’s technology. In total, around 5,000 people at Ericsson today in the TV area.
– When we started this in 2007 it was very much about helping pay-TV companies and telephone companies, with technology to effectively get out programs on different platforms. Now it’s more about that we help traditional broadcasters with their broadcasts, but we have contact with all actors in the television world and everyone has different needs during this major transition, says Simon Frost, marketing and communications manager for Ericsson TV ventures.
No real competitor is not, he points out.
– If you just look at the platforms for delivering TV content as well Cisco (American networks sixth) a competitor. But it’s about helping TV companies with all of their services, we actually have no serious rival.
Two-thirds of Ericsson’s revenues come from services today (services) and software. It is commonly associated with the company – mobile broadband – accounts for a smaller portion.
