Council: Rinse out the water in the most polluted river – New Technology

To get rid of the contaminants from fire foam in the well, the environmental office recommended Magnus Jonsson to flush out their water in Delångersån. The river is already high levels of fluoride additives did not know the environmental manager to.

The back of Magnus Jonsson’s house leads a hose down to Delångersån. Around the clock flushed water out of the river.

– This winter stopped the pump and the water in the hose froze. I had to take the hose into the garage and thawing three times. It was not fun to flop around in the snow. Then swore they good enough. That it will be my job, says Magnus Jonsson.

In a SLU study in 2013 discovered the researcher Lutz Ahrens and his colleagues high levels poly- and perfluorinated alkylsubstanser, called PFAS substances, Delångersån. Of the 41 tested the waters had Delångersån maximum concentration.

This is a group of substances that are common in fire foam and characterized by very strong bonds between carbon and fluorine atoms. The substances are therefore persistent in the environment and some of them are suspected of long-term intake of high levels of damaging immune system, hormone system and fertility.

Lutz Ahrens do not think it was good that the Environment Agency recommended Magnus Jonsson to flush out its polluted water in Delångersån.

– When pollute to the environment . They should contact experts for advice, this is a complex issue, he said.

Magnus Jonsson water has been analyzed several times. The highest was the total value of six PFAS substances 2176 nanograms per liter of water.

I think Lutz Ahrens is a high value . He believes that Magnus Jonsson water should be pumped up and filtered instead of being flushed out of Delångersån.

– But it’s an expensive and long process, says Lutz Ahrens.

When new technology asks the municipal Environmental Affairs Margareta Eiserman of the high concentrations of PFAS in Delångersån know she does not to them.

Should not you do it as an environmental manager?

– I can not keep track of which values are available in different waters, it’s not really my mission, she says.

Margaret Eiserman believe that the addition of fluoride additives to the river by flushing from Magnus Jonsson’s house is marginal.

- The total amount that has been placed This is a relatively small amount. It was 20 liters of concentrate used and most have already reached Delångersån in connection with the fire, she said.

Why Delångersån showed maximum concentrations of the PFAS in the study in 2013, researchers know not yet. Possible sources of emissions are wastewater treatment plants and a fire drill site. Lutz Ahrens is working on a follow-up study which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
