Here is plastic made from potatoes – New Technology

The plastic Solanyl is biodegradable because it is made of potato starch.

Forget the old oil. This plastic is made from potatoes.

Plastics made from fossil oil gets competition.

– This material is both renewable sources and biodegradable. Therefore it is very interesting, says Björn Florman the material library.

The material is called Solanyl from a company with the same name as collaborating with Dutch Rodenburg Biopolymers.

– Many customers are very interested and there are many tests right now, says Stefan Hansson, Swedish retailers in IMCD.

The raw material is thus potato starch and it requires no special manufacturing process without going to injection mold as other plastics. An application is a kind of nätkub, about half a square meter that can be placed on the sea floor, such as ports, where people destroyed the vegetation. They serve as temporary reef mussels to attach to. And when mussels created a structure on their own broken network down.

Another application is the pipe that is buried in the ground for cables but where the pipe is mainly required in the construction phase. Then it is an advantage to not old plastic is left in the ground for 100 years.

The company introduces also for bags, golf tees, clips for tomato plants, disposable cutlery and packaging.

– I think mainly because it has a future in the packaging industry, says Björn Florman. Since the material is biodegradable, a global distributor take an environmentally responsible without knowing how the recovery goes to all the different countries.
