Swedish companies should be prepared to assimilate new technologies wherever in the world the technology comes to writes Claes Sandgren, a professor of civil law, in response to Göran K Hansson.

In Dagens Nyheter (2/4) says Professor Göran K Hansson for a scientific breakthroughs made in Sweden by a French scientist and criticizes Swedish industry for not taking advantage of this discovery. The industry must become better at utilizing breakthrough that takes place “at home”, says Hansson, who criticizes that Astra Zeneca acquired access to new technologies through laboratories in England and the United States.

Hansson’s argument is to say the least remarkable. Apparently, Swedish companies exploit the discoveries made in Sweden, US companies US discoveries, Korean firms Korean discoveries and Moldovan companies Moldovan discoveries. No, it is not so and will not go into that way. Swedish companies should be prepared to assimilate new technologies that are relevant to business and they are well placed to exploit anywhere in the world that technology comes to. It is thus the ability of companies to scout the advent of such breakthroughs that are critical to their competitiveness.

The example AstraZeneca also illustrates that it has become less and less sense to talk about Swedish companies in these contexts. AstraZeneca is headquartered in England and also the bulk of both research and development and production in countries other than Sweden. Approximately 10 percent of employees work in Sweden and 12 percent of the shareholders are Swedish. Is Astra Zeneca Swedish?

It surprises to Hansson, incoming permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy of Sciences, thinks so provincial in today’s globalized world.
