Therefore, the new Java delayed - IDG.se

to Oracle announces to the release of Java SE 8 is postponed from September to the first quarter of next year is nothing that makes me raise an eyebrow. It was expected, not only because Java has a history of delays, but also because this type of project is extremely complex.

Class=”paragraphIntro”> Java SE 8, or Java 8 it is sometimes called, is the next major update of Java, both the language and the basic platform. So it’s a lot to keep track of and it is extremely important that the finished version will be fine. It is understandable that it is possible spanner in the works sometimes.

Georges Saab is the development manager for Java promised me personally, face to face when I met him in January , that it is September that apply. When I think maybe he did not exactly promised, he said that one can never be absolutely sure in this kind of context, but he explained in all cases with great clarity that it would be very to compromise on the planned launch in September in conjunction with JavaOne conference.

“A” is in this case equals safety. Mark Reinhold is Chief Architect for the Java Platform explains in a blog post that the delay is due in part to Oracle’s developers have been putting energy into addressing the much talked about security in Java.

It is also understandable. What is not understandable is that Oracle is not already in the autumn flagged for security issues would cause problems in terms of the timetable for Java SE 8. There are no fools who work on the further development of Java. I am quite sure, I bet my finest electric guitar, to Reinhold, Saab and the other did already last autumn that the timetable would not hold.

What to do in such a situation? One option is to drill down your head in the sand, to fight and hope that everything works as intended. It was certainly what many did in the Oracle development team, but hardly all managers.

I think the fact that the news of the delay comes later than necessary due to the information culture that exists in many large companies. The idea is not to get ahead. It is best to wait until the last moment to come with bad news. Sure, it may be wise in a way, it’s like the disaster movies when the high military does not inform the public that this will be obliterated by nuclear weapons / meteorites / attacks from aliens / etc in order to avoid public panic.

If I was a business that relied on the Java platform, I would still like to have the news as early as possible, in order to make the best decisions possible.

Now I’m fingers crossed that Oracle people may order on security and another in the next version of Java as quickly as possible. It would be great for corporate IT in general.

luck!
