Increased African phobia concerned Ullenhag - Swedish Daily

In September last year assaulted a 32-year-old man and his son on a footbridge in Malmö. The assault is classified as a hate crime because the man and the son flooded with racist expression that alluded to their skin color.

number of reports of hate crimes with African-phobic subjects has increased by 24 percent between 2008 and 2012 while the total number of reported hate crimes decreased by six per cent during the period.

In November gave Erik Ullenhag Multicultural Centre to carry out a systematic review of Afro-phobia in Sweden.

In an op-ed in the Daily News the investigators that “stereotypes about Africans even today is viable in Swedish contemporary culture.”

One of the investigators, law student Samson Beshir, told TT that there are many reasons to hate crimes with African-phobic subjects increasing and that one of these is the dehumanization of Africans in public debate.

– Take a picture of how Africans are portrayed in school supplies, for example, that Africa is only mentioned as an object in the context of colonization, he says.

investigators propose several measures in debate article to break the trend and stop the African phobias, including a government commission to investigate deeper Afro-Swedes situation.

– It is also important to have a broad public education effort. Taking the chance to make up with Sweden’s history in terms of the transatlantic slave trade and the development of rastänkandet says Samson Beshir.

Erik Ullenhag says to the racism faced by Afro-Swedes must be taken very seriously.

– I am particularly concerned about the Swedish Somali group’s situation. It is the group that has suffered most stereotypes of the debate in recent years, he said to TT.

Ullenhag says that the report should be studied, but even now he says that he is skeptical of a couple of the suggestions. This includes a proposal for affirmative action.
