SMHI betting on better prospects - Swedish Dagbladet

The new weather model have more data points and therefore better able to predict the weather variations between adjacent locations. Now it is between five and eleven kilometers between the measurement points, where SMHI gather information including temperature, wind and precipitation.

In the future there will only be 2.5 kilometers between the measurement points.

This new model requires more computing power, and therefore SMHI together with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute to purchase a more powerful computer.

– The challenge for us is to take care of all the details we have in the new weather model and then describe the weather for the public in the best way possible to provide a basis for better decision about how everyday life will be planned, says Fredrik Linde , director of forecasting and warning service at SMHI, to DN.

The new models will be launched in spring 2014. They will not mean that there will be more locations to search for weather forecast on SMHI’s website. However, it is intended that the forecasts for the towns that are to be precise.
