EU Parliament to stop Swift - Swedish Dagbladet

In a vote Strasbourg voted 280 members to the agreement, which gives the United States access to the Belgian company Swift’s databases of Europeans banking, temporarily canceled.

But almost as many, 254 members, wants the agreement enforced. The split reflects well the division that existed in the European Parliament since 2010 they clubbed Swift agreement, after many and great quarrel on the one hand, data security and privacy, on the other hand will to combat terrorism at America’s side.

The U.S. authorities and the European Commission promised expensive that all data that is transferred to the United States only to be used to track potential terrorist financing.

United States would seek bank details of suspected persons, but not the sweeping spy on all Europeans bank movements.

But reports that the U.S. intelligence community NSA may have fueled these international banking data randomly and the lump has received European Parliament to resume debate.

European Parliament no formal right to cancel the contract, but writing to the European Commission responsible for the issue, Cecilia Malmström, should consider their request, especially for future agreements with other countries that Parliament must approval before they can be clubbed.

– had rather wanted to terminate the contract immediately, but the requirement to defer while we investigate the NSA’s activities is still positive, said MEP Christian Engström of the Pirate Party.

Engstrom says to resume the transfer of banking data, so the U.S. would have to demonstrate their compliance with the agreement that they promised – and that he does not believe.

– I do not trust the U.S. simply. Snowdenuppgifterna have demonstrated that when the data is sent across the Atlantic well as used it a bit anyway, said Engstrom.

Shortly after the vote, reiterated Cecilia Malmström in a communiqué what she already said about the NSA and Swift, that there are no signs that the United States has violated the contract rules, but that they are waiting for further assurances from Washington. Meanwhile, the contract shall apply.
