The computer smart as a 4 year old - New Technology

Artificial intelligence, how smart is it really? It has a team of scientists IQ tested out front.

problem of creating artificial intelligence is that the human mind is hard to emulate, say researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It requires a sophisticated mix of facts, experience and common sense.

ConceptNet 4, an artificial intelligence developed by MIT, was put under the microscope by a standardized IQ test for children. The result? Smart as a 4 year old. But with a very uneven results, as compared to when the test is carried out on that particular child.

– If a child had got a result that varied so much here it would have been a symptom that something was wrong, said Robert Sloan, professor and head of computer science at the University of Illinois website.

The very worst result was the computer in the “why-questions”, those in much based on what Sloan calls “implicit facts – things so obvious that we do not know we know them. A computer can know the temperature at which water freezes , but we know that ice is cold. “

study is presented in U.S. Artificial Intelligence Conference in Washington.
