The American activist organization ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) did earlier this year filed a lawsuit against the NSA spy organization. The lawsuit accused the NSA for violating the U.S. Constitution because of extensive wiretapping of American citizens.
A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit last week, with the explanation that the interception is necessary for the U.S. to retain the freedom of citizens.
- The Conversation certainly covers all the phone calls that take place in the U.S., but it gives the NSA the ability to detect threats that would otherwise go undetected, writes the judge in his judicial decisions.
He adds that there is no evidence that the NSA used the so-called meta information collected for anything other than to stop potential terrorist attacks.
ACLU showed strong criticism against the court decision and says it will appeal.
- We are very unhappy with this decision as misinterpreting and underestimating the citizens constitutional right to privacy, says ACLUs lawyer Jameel Jaffer.
