Emerging new technologies requires ethical forum – Östgötaleden Correspondent

In order to promote life sciences in Sweden wants Stefan Löfven invest 1 billion on an innovation fund. He would also create a National Innovation Council.

I hope you do not forget the moral aspects of the technology. The life sciences and nanotechnology makes it possible to identify molecules that are associated with a certain disease at an early stage.

This can lead to medicalization. Although we are not yet sick, we screened. This in itself need not be a bad thing but a new local ethical forum to uphold the moral awareness of the technology is not superfluous. There were citizens, the County Council’s Ethics Committee and the University can meet.

Another technique with moral aspects are neuro-technology. Deep brain stimulation used at the University Hospital for various purposes, including Parkinson’s disease is attracting much attention in view of other applications.

The treatment is not without side effects. When you teach ethics, many people are interested in the improvement of mankind. Various neuro techniques can already improve your moods, emotions and cognition.

While the future of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis requires reflection. This technique makes it possible to eventually find out the fetal genome from a blood test. The question whether we can get the perfect baby, which of course is not possible, get a new urgency.

The ethics question is not technology but promotes reflection on its moral aspects. A local ethical forum is relevant because the decision to introduce techniques often taken in a county. During a conference of the National Council on Medical Ethics was argued that science should concern us all. The issue of the gap between the humanities and sciences would again be current.

With a local and visible forum for scientists from both sides, politicians and citizens would be the ethical reflection to follow the fascinating technology. Science is important for innovation, but also requires a morally acceptable application.
