Free service tracks the aircraft worldwide – New Technology

Satellite Aeiron company will offer the tracking of aircraft throughout the world, for free. It will make it easier to find missing aircraft accidents.

Today, a large part of airspace outside radar stations reach, and many aircraft are hard to track – especially if something goes wrong. Aireon, a subsidiary which operates the Iridium communication satellites, will offer a service that can track aircraft anywhere. And it will be free for rescue organizations. The company describes itself as a reaction to the Malaysia Airlines MH370′s disappearance.

ADS-B Automatic Dependent Surveillance brodcast, is a system for tracking aircraft where the aircraft determines its position using GPS and then transmits the information. The signal can be received by ground stations or other aircraft. According Aeiron it can provide coverage to about 10 percent of Earth’s surface.

With its own service “Aireon ALERT”, Aircraft location and emergency Response tracking, coverage should be 100 percent. It builds on the company sends up receivers for ADS-B with the 66 communication satellites Iridium plans to send up into low orbit between 2015 and 2017th
