Japanese submarine with Kockums Engine by Collins – New Technology

It looks as though Australia chooses the Japanese submarine Soryo with Stirling engines, Kockums in place of Collins submarines.

According to data of News Corp Australia, the Japanese option emerged as a favorite before the solutions presented by the German and French revolutions. For the German proposal was TKMS where Kockums had a role. But since last summer, ThyssenKrupp sold Kockums to Saab.

But the Japanese Soryo class, based in part on the solutions developed by Kockums. For example, Kockums Stirling Air Independent Propulsion Engines, manufactured under license by Kawasaki. In addition, a similar solution for the rudder found on Gotland submarines.

Soryo class has a displacement of 4200 tons submerged. The speed submerged down to 20 knots. The range is just over 11000 km at a speed of 6.5 knots. The crew is 65 people.

The Australian Government is keen to make a quick decision on the replacement for the Collins submarines, which is Kockums Structures built in Adelaide in Australia in the 1990s. They are expected to be expensive to be used after 2026 when their life expectancy is at an end.

Australia is expected to order ten new submarines worth of 130 billion. A decision is expected for the end of the year, reports the News Corp Australia.
