Should the caliper sit forward or backward? – New Technology

TECHNOLOGY ISSUE. Why mounted caliper on different cars? Ny Teknik reader solves a vehicle issue.

Reader Question:

We have discussed at work why you mount the caliper upper back toward the cabin on some cars and top forwards in the car direction of travel.

Does it have to do with cooling? Or is it because the chassis components, or even the look of the car when studying the brakes through the rim

It would be interesting to hear what people is familiar with the car development for opinions.

Henry Tidstrand, Ljungby

Reader Response:

The location of the caliper is above all a question of what we call in automotive gasket. It’s about which front suspension concept you choose, for example: McPherson, double wishbone? Facing the steering gear in front of or behind the front axle? If the car is front-wheel drive or rear wheel drive? Is the engine transversely

As to brake cooling, so it is important to cool the brake disc. The brake disc absorbs far more heat energy than the brake pads so it is mainly the brake disc to be cooled.

flow of cooling air in a wheel arch is also very difficult to predict, as it usually is strongly turbulent. How a brake caliper hit by cooling air depends on how deep into the rim it is positioned and the pressure conditions under the car and the body along the side of the reels.

Thus, one can not generally say that a caliper placement in front of the front axle would be better than behind.
