Geologist Maria Åkesson has investigated the occurrence of pesticides in groundwater in Skåne. She has gone through the old analysis results and developed new data to study the spread of pesticides and investigate methods to assess proliferation risks.

– It is not good to find pesticides in groundwater. These types of substances are broken down slowly once they reached the ground, and in addition, it takes time for groundwater to be translated, says Maria Åkesson in a press release.

survey includes eleven municipalities in Skåne and the results show that pesticides are commonly found in groundwater.

– But we know still too little about the prevalence of being able to say anything about the future quality problems and potential health risks, says Maria Åkesson.

She hopes that the research results will promote dialogue between the authorities so that groundwater can be better protected in the future.

– It is remarkable that we in Sweden have a relatively poor control of ground water and its quality. Groundwater is one of our most important natural resources, and Sweden, besides, often at the forefront of environmental work in general, says Maria Åkesson.

The dissertation will be on 19 September.
