The Japanese government adopted on Tuesday a decision on a legislative amendment prohibiting the free flight of drones over densely populated areas.

Efter several incidents during the spring, where for example a drone landed at the prime minister’s roof in Tokyo, the government decided on Tuesday to propose to parliament (Diet) to carry out a statutory amendment banning flights by drones in the 23 districts in the capital Tokyo, like in all other provincial capitals in the country’s prefectures (counties).

Ministry of Transport shall also formulate rules which mean that areas with a population more than 4,000 people per square kilometer is also affected by the flight ban for drones.

With the amendment, anyone who wants to fly drones to request permission of the nearest air traffic control in the area. It also introduces a ban on night flights or weather conditions when the operator does not have full control of the drone.

penalty for violating the rules will be fined up to the equivalent to more than 30,000 crowns.

In addition to a tightening of the rules from the government wants more corresponding county councils in the country to introduce local rules for drones and radio-controlled model aircraft may be used, reports the Asahi Shimbun.
