The first close-up at the planet Pluto offers a surprise – a young mountain range with 3500 meters high peaks.

När the first close-up of the New Horizons probe is now beginning to reach the earth they offer information that surprises scientist at Nasa.

One such surprise is a mountain range with up to 3500 meter high peaks. And in the case of a young information scientists. Not older than 100 million years, which is young in the solar system that is believed to be 4.56 billion years old.

Jeff Moore, geology , geophysics and imaging team leader at NASA Ames Research Center, said in EFT press release that the area may still be geologically active.

That it is young, he says due to the lack of craters. In the solar system, Pluto årmiljarder should have been reached by the amounts of asteroids that could the traces left behind. But the theory is that the geological activity on the planet has erased these tracks.

– This is one of the youngest faces we’ve seen in the the solar system, says Jeff Moore.

The mountains probably consists of frozen water. At the low temperatures that exist on Pluto, on average, 44 K, the ice hard as stone and could form the rock formations with altitude 3500 meters.

The image NASA released was 1.5 hours before New Horizons was closest Pluto, at a distance of 77000 km.

A video Nasa published showing where on Pluto as close-ups taken.
