British researchers are aiming record deep – wants to build a 50 meter deep pool.

University of Essex and the company Blue Abyss has unveiled plans for a 50 meter deep pool. It is 8 meters more than the Italian Y-40, which is today rated as the world’s deepest swimming pool.

The new record pool, which presented at a space conference in Liverpool, the astronauts to simulate weightlessness in space, while divers can simulate deep-sea habitats. It should for example be able to practice free diving, test advanced scuba gear and remotely operated underwater vehicles (so-called ROV’s, remote operated vehicles) at great depths.

The basin, which is 50 meters long and 40 meters wide, is also the largest in terms of volume. Although the whole pool is not a record depth, it will have several “steps” of which the lower reaches down to 50 meters.

Building is expected to go 40 million pounds, equivalent to about 500 million, according to British media.
