AMD halves server cost - IDG.se

A couple years ago drew Facebook launched a project called the Open Compute Project, which aims to develop servers using components that are easy to replace and is independent of specific vendors.

class=”paragraphIntro”> processor manufacturer AMD now come to the shoot with a number of products that implement these specifications and says that the company’s servers will mean 57 percent lower cost than traditional servers. AMD has figured out that to get a TCO cost of 10,669 dollars a traditional server while they are based on the company’s open architecture will come away with 4,589 dollars. Converted to a virtual workstation, it would mean that you can lower the price 91-38 dollars per workstation.

The new products is based on the AMD Open 3.0 where the core ‘s Opteron 6300 processors in servers that houses working memory of 384 GB.
Although Intel is on a similar theme, and recently announced a new reference design for rack-based servers. The idea is that the various components should not be tied to specific suppliers or be soldered to the chassis. This would for example be abl e to extend the life of your servers by only having to replace individual components rather than the entire box.

Initiatives such as these follow hand in hand with trend toward virtualizing not only servers but also everything from storage to network devices which will make the components less hardware dependent.
