Spotify stopped the attack - New Technology

Suddenly, users could download and save all the songs that were played on Spotify. An extension in the Chrome browser made this possible. Today, however, stop up Spotify to security hole.

It was the Dutch programmer Robin Aldenhoven who developed Downloadify extension for the Chrome browser. With the extension installed, users could that played music from Spotify via the service’s new Web version save the songs on their computer.

The usual desktop version of Spotify were not affected, nor mobile versions.

The news was reported by the Dutch site Tweakers on Tuesday, and by The Verge.

problem was serious because Spotify’s business model is based on the copyright holders get paid every time a song is played on Spotify . If the user saves the song, they can then play it without the record companies and artists get paid. Particularly sensitive was because Spotify in the near future according to Cnet News would renegotiate their contract with American record label.

After a short time the supplement was removed from the Google Chrome Web Store, but it still worked and could be downloaded from the site Github.

On Wednesday, however, Spotify to stop up the security hole that allowed Downloadify could work. Robin Aldenhoven, which mainly seems to have been looking to highlight the problem, said cheerfully in a twitter post that Spotify changed the protocol and thus could not use the supplement anymore.

In a comment to The Verge, he also made it clear that he was not going to update Downloadify to get around Spotify’s new protocols. In another twitter post said Robin Aldenhoven “And Spotify = supreme … So I do not want to hurt them. Just pay for the music (it is almost free).”

Ny Teknik have searched Spotify for a comment but has not received a response.
