Kiruna mine on new depth - New Technology

LKAB opens today Wednesday its new main level in Kiruna mine 1,365 feet underground. The investment will make that mining could continue for at least another 20 years.

Twelve years after that LKAB started planning for the new main level opens now the first of five stages. On the new depth is 4.3 million cubic meters of rock taken out to make room for tunnels and caverns.

The new mining level is 320 meters deeper than the previous one. According to forecasts, LKAB here to remove 35 million tons of crude ore per year for 20 to 25 years into the future. The initiative is one of the largest industrial investments made in Sweden, and has a budget of 12.4 billion.

ore should give pay back the investment and make a profit at LKAB, but should also bear substantial costs for LKAB above ground when parts of Kiruna have to move because of mining deform the ground.

Twelve kilometers of lines have been added at the new level, and three kilometers. According LKAB will be Scandinavia’s deepest, heaviest and busiest rail. Seven trains with 21 cars in each set should together make 180 trips daily.

-There is commuter traffic. It will run almost twice the tonnage of the a r as the iron ore line to Narvik, says Johanna Fogman, Communications Officer at LKAB in Kiruna.

At the new level, LKAB has changed gauge, compared to how it looks higher up in the mine. It goes from 891 millimeters to the standard gauge of 1,435 millimeters. The gain is that the cars can be loaded heavier, 34 tonnes to 30 tonnes per wagon earlier. The trains will also have a higher speed, it increases from 36 to 61 kilometers per hour.

Rail traffic underground is completely automated. In other ways the work has been automated, and a new control center for including trains and mountain games have been built above ground.

Aboveground also have a new pumping station for air ventilation system built. After ventilation, the temperature at the bottom of the mine about 18 degrees. Without it, the temperature is over 20 degrees and the humidity is high.

When the new mining level is fully developed will work for between 100 and 150 people distributed in different shifts. During the process of constructing the new level has more than 1 000 people have been involved.
