Galaxy S4 is the sequel to the company’s former top model Galaxy S3 and went on sale in late April in South Korea, Samsung’s home market. The model was then spread rapidly across the world and is now sold in over 60 countries. Samsung’s goal is that the cell phone will be available in virtually every country in June.

Compared to its predecessor Galaxy S4 reached 10 million mark in half the time. The cell phone is especially designed to compete with Apple’s iPhone. By comparison, Apple managed to sell 5 million copies in three days when the company began selling its latest model, the iPhone 5, in September last year.

Samsung is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones, but most of all, the company is the world’s largest maker of smartphones. In the latter market, the company for 31 percent of all phones sold, according to research firm Gartner. The second largest is Apple with 18 percent of the market. Then it’s a big step down to number three LG with a market share of 5 percent.

Samsung builds up most of its smartphones on Google’s Android operating system. Apple uses its own system iOS.
